How to Choose Keyboard Keycaps: Material and Height Guide

10 Jun 2025

01. The Importance of Keycaps

Keycaps, though seemingly insignificant, are critical components that impact typing tactile feedback, aesthetics, and durability. High-quality manufacturers invest heavily in keycap design and materials to reflect craftsmanship.

02. Material Selection

ABS Plastic

Features: Non-toxic, low-temperature resistant (-40°C), and affordable. Common in entry-level keyboards but prone to oil shine over time.

PBT Plastic

Advantages: High hardness, anti-shine properties, and granular texture. More expensive but durable and ideal for tactile enthusiasts.

POM Material

Characteristics: Extremely durable with a cold, smooth finish. Rare in stock keyboards but known for longevity (e.g., Cherry G80-3000 series).

03. Keycap Height Options

OEM Height

Ergonomic design with slight curvature, widely compatible for most users.

Other Heights

  • Cherry Profile: Shorter than OEM, ideal for prolonged typing.
  • SA Height: Tall retro-style caps (18mm) but fatiguing for extended use.
  • XDA/DSA: Uniform height for minimalist layouts, great for custom builds.

04. Key Considerations

Switch Compatibility

Pair tactile switches with thinner caps and linear switches with thicker caps for optimized feedback.

Personal Preferences & Budget

No material is universally superior—balance cost, texture preferences, and use cases. PBT suits durability seekers, while ABS offers budget-friendly options.
